I give Scherwood Golf a "C"!
- by Pete Mandich
When most people spell the word “Sherwood” as in Sherwood Forest of Robin Hood fame, they leave out the “C”. In this case I believe the “C” to be the most important letter in the name of this wonderful facility. This “C”, in my mind, signifies the importance of the Community aspect in Scherwood Golf’s history.
Founded in 1966 by Bill Christenson, Scherwood Golf has continued for forty-five plus years to serve the Region in many different ways. I remember the community pool, the entertainment at The Scherwood Club, the parties and weddings held, etc. Scherwood Golf has been many things to many people.
For the last thirty plus years, Marv and Eileen Hanson and their family have owned and operated Scherwood Golf, and it has grown, changed, and survived through some tough economic times. During this time thousands of local golfers have been introduced to the game of golf here, but more important than that hundreds of people have found employment, in many cases their first job, at this Community-based facility.
The first thing you will notice when you arrive at Scherwood Golf is the physical location on Joliet Street surrounded by homes and close by downtown Schererville, IN. Upon entering you will be greeted by a well organized attractive clubhouse, golf shop and bar/restaurant. The banquet facilities and locker rooms are capable of comfortably handling any size outing or function you may be planning. Most importantly, you will be impressed by the friendly, attentive staff throughout Scherwood Golf. They know their business, they care, and it shows. The golf shop is well stocked, and watched over by Marv Hanson and his staff of professionals. The restaurant manager Sheri Kretz makes sure Friday night’s fish fry is the talk of the town - try it, you will not be disappointed.
As for the golf course(s), the nine hole executive course is perfect for the beginner, but also a great place to work on your short game. The driving range is all grass with excellent new golf balls and ample room. Rick Thomas and Carl Swanson, PGA teaching professionals, will be happy to help. (They know their stuff!)
As for the championship (18) hole course, those of us who have played here over the many years know it can change. Always a challenge, but it varies greatly based on the weather, the seasons, and the “stakes”. Play for fun on a beautiful summer day and you may shoot your career round. Play in one of the tournaments on a windy, wet, cold fall morning and you won’t know you’re playing the same course. Mark Martinez, assistant Daniel Alvarez and their staff have worked well with Marv to affect the necessary changes to the course. I like the “new” holes, and believe they fit in nicely with the rest of the course.
Lastly, the Hanson family has worked hard to keep prices low during these changing times. They appreciate their customers, their staff and their community. I give Scherwood Golf a “C” - because I do not believe there is any higher grade than that.
