When you combine an established (high quality) golf facility – with a forward thinking (new) ownership (&)
management team – you can only project positives for the future. At River Pointe Country Club in Hobart,
Indiana, this most assuredly is the case. The beneficiary? Golfers throughout our region!
Hobart, IN – A Real Brief History
Having already covered the history of Hobart, IN in a past article, I’ll just mention a few highlights. Established in 1847 by George Earle – an Englishman who came to the area to open a sawmill – Mr. Earle purchased a large tract of land from the legendary Pottawatomie Chief Ben Ack. This land included a section of the deep river, that he went on to dam, forming what is currently Lake George. Mr. Earle named the town “Hobart” – which was the middle name of his beloved brother back in England. The first brickyard opened in 1872 – very successful because of the abundance of clay in the area – and where the local sports teams eventually would get the nickname “Brickies.” And one slice of trivia – a gentleman named Tell Taylor – who as a young man sat near the sight of Mr. Earle’s sawmill – penned the famous song “Down By The Old Mill Stream” – (for those of us old enough to remember!).
The current town of Hobart is a community of approx. 26,000 residents – with over (50) civic/charitable organizations – a vibrant downtown area of shops (&) restaurants, a beautiful riverfront pathway (including the Revelli Bandshell); and which is home to many lakefront festivals & special events. Hobart is a place with many well-established homes, but at the same time growing in all directions – including the large Westfield Mall area. (And) which has been known for many years as the “Friendly City.”
River Pointe CC
River Pointe CC is a beautifully designed and maintained (27) hole golf course located in the southeastern area of the town of Hobart, IN. Completed in the early 1970’s, River Pointe was built in large part by (and for) executives working at the local US Steel Corporation. Known as the “Supervisors Club” for approx. (40) years, the course was opened as a “private” club (&) still maintains the conditioning, and appearance that you would expect at a private country club. Prior to development as a golf course, the land was home to a large dairy farm (&) ranch, and was once rumored to be a hide-out of sorts for the notorious Chicago gangster Al Capone. But set one step on the property, and you will immediately realize this expanse of land, natural ponds & vegetation, etc. was just waiting to become a golf course.
In approx. 2007, the course changed hands, opened to the public, and was operated by a private golf management company. (And) beginning this season, “new” ownership – (the same owners that own & operate White Hawk CC in Crown Point, IN (&) The Brassie GC in Chesterton) – have taken over – and the improvements being made are already highly visible.
The management team – headed by long time region golf fixture, (and Lake Central HS grad), General Manager Steve Ehlert – have listened -and- learned to their golfing customers this year, and plan to move forward: ex: new membership packages, *A “Prime Time” card system, and “Platinum” golf packages (allowing for play at River Pointe, The Brassie, & White Hawk) are now available for 2014.
More
All (27) holes at River Pointe CC are in fantastic condition – (thanks to veteran golf course Superintendent Todd Adams, his assistant Mike Martin, and my new buddy – Mechanic John Powers. The tree-lined fairways are a wonderful strain of blue grass, and the poa/bent greens are among the finest in our area. The fairway & greenside bunkering is equally well-maintained, and the rough, (though thick & healthy), is mowed down to a very reasonable height. The (4) sets of tees – measuring 5,000 to 6,600 yds – allow all players to enjoy their round; the many dog-leg holes are “sporty,” yet challenging; and the efficient drainage, (15!) ponds, & continuous cart paths ensure that the course will be open on all but the worst of weather days.
Further
River Pointe CC is home to both the boys & girls Hobart HS golf teams; is very senior and junior friendly (with special rates for both) (&) great rates exist for all players; the golf carts are brand new w/covers & windshields; the golf shop & snack area is a comfortable place to relax, watch TV, or just “hang-out” with friendly employees like Linda, Alexis, or Corynne! There are beautiful homes & townhouses on/near the course in the Deep River Pointe subdivision; outings are encouraged, and the course offers a large outdoor pavilion -or- picnic area with grilling options (including grill master Rocco!); a large number of league opportunities exist, pull carts are available (the course is also very walker friendly); rangers/marshals – including new friends Jack & Scott – ensure a good pace of play; the driving range & practice area (including a sand play practice area) are in great shape; and, Karen will keep you “refreshed” with her ever-moving beverage cart on the course.
In Conclusion
River Pointe CC is a wonderful place to enjoy a day of golf! With its quiet & peaceful “natural” surroundings, its fun atmosphere, (with maybe a shot or two at birdie), and its “new” and highly professional ownership & management team – River Pointe is definitely moving forward & “Pointe(d)” in the right direction!

And – under the “oops” file: No matter how many times we edit this writing, we always make “tyyppos” – well last month while writing about The Course At Aberdeen, it really stood out in this regard. I started by saying that the course would really challenge your kills! (skills): Then I misspelled Asst Superintendent John Mischke’s name – sorry John -and- a long list of golfers I met at Aberdeen were completely omitted – including members Carol & Rick, players on the course Eric & Joe, Todd & Lenny, Eric & Denne (correct spelling!), Mike, Janet, PJ & Faye of the Michiana Senior Golf Association - Valpo University Golf team members – Kyle Henning, Thomas Wettstein, Eric Winters, Matt Ward, Joe Harris, Michael Holevas, Ryan Heck, Jared Magnoline, and Annie Gaugert. As well as Joyce, Larry & Chris at the Valparaiso Public Library – I’ll try to do better! And as Always, I appreciate any comments, suggestions, questions, stories, etc. Please contact me at our e-mail address: golfplus3@netzero.com or leave me a voicemail at (219)947-4313, and to read past golf course reviews – or to just visit Golf Plus newspaper online – visit our website at GolfPlusOnline.net.
On a personal note: Excuse me for sending out this highly personal message – but since they are loyal readers – Congratulations to my wonderful daughter Stacey & her new husband George on their recent wedding – Love you & best wishes always.
And lastly: The late, great comedian Jack Benny once said about golf: Give me a set of clubs, fresh air, and a beautiful partner -and- you can keep the set of clubs and the fresh air!
